Cheese is a new type of food found in SLASH'EM.[1]

Generation

Cheese is somewhat uncommon, being randomly generated with the same frequency as cream pies.

Description

Cheese provides 250 nutrition at a weight of 2, giving it a nutrition/weight ratio second only to lembas wafers. Additionally, it can be used to tame sewer rats, black rats, giant rats and pack rats.[2]

Even though its material is listed as fleshy (presumably so that carnivorous rats will eat it), eating cheese does not violate the vegetarian conduct,[3] only the vegan conduct. Interestingly, cheese in the pre-modern age was generally made using rennet extracted from dried calves' stomachs; many modern vegetarians do not consider cheese made with animal rennet to be vegetarian, since the calves must be killed to obtain it.

Strategy

Cheese is likely worth hanging on to, if only for its high nutrition/weight ratio. Rats are generally not terribly useful pets, so only the most dedicated (or desperate) pacifists will want to use cheese to tame them.
