DeathOnAStick are both a NetHack player and a series of characters played by this player with the same name. The player is famous in the NetHack community for his year-and-a-half-long game on nethack.alt.org, from 2004-04-17 to 2005-11-27. This (in)famous player spent much of the game's playtime arduously and repeatedly polypiling rocks into gems and also collecting the pet giants necessary to carry the various bags of gems into the planes and beyond because there were so many gems that they were far to heavy to haul alone.

After killing the Wizard of Yendor on dungeon level 1, DeathOnAStick discovered a potion of gain level recently fallen from the Wizard's death drop. The player then had the character quaff it without first fully identifying it, only to find the potion was unfortunately cursed!

Upon rising up through the ceiling and reaching the Plane of Earth, the player desperately checked the character's inventory, which doing so, revealed that he (the character) was carrying none of the gems which were so tediously and meticulously collected. At this point in the game, the connection went idle for 38 seconds. A few of the character's entourage of giants were close enough to be dragged into the Planes during the odious potion mishap, but were either killed off or left behind at the various inter-plane portals on the way to the Astral Plane. Ultimately, the only gems which the character DeathOnAStick had in his inventory at the time of his ascension were a measly 2 dilithium crystals.

Epilogue: After years of what can only be assumed to be a period of recovery, the player DeathOnAStick attempted the feat again, this time victoriously ascending after 405 hours on August 16, 2010, whilst hauling a treasure trove of over 8,000 gems to a much celebrated and redemptive immortal fame and glory!
