Defunct features

Over the years, NetHack has added many features, but also removed some. These defunct features are listed below.

List of defunct monsters

• osquip -- in NetHack 3.0.0 through 3.0.6.
• the Three Stooges -- in NetHack 2.3e only.
• the mad scientist -- in NetHack 3.0.0 through 3.0.6.
• unarmored soldier -- in NetHack 3.0.0 through 3.1.3.
• Elf Quest inhabitants: Earendil, Elwing, High-elf, and the Goblin King -- in NetHack 3.1.0 through 3.2.3.
• tourmaline and onyx stones -- in Hack 1.0 through NetHack 2.3e.

List of defunct objects

• The Palantir of Westernesse -- in NetHack 3.1.0 through 3.2.3.
• dead lizard -- occurs as a random object in Hack 1.0 through NetHack 3.0.5; obtained thereafter by killing a lizard.
• badge -- in NetHack 2.3e only.
• elfin chain mail -- in NetHack 1.3d through 2.3e. More or less equivalent to the elven mithril-coat.
• spellbook of genocide -- in NetHack 1.3d through 3.0.10.
• pair of gloves -- in Hack 1.0 through NetHack 2.3e. More or less equivalent to the pair of leather gloves.
• shield -- in Hack 1.0 through NetHack 2.3e. Has similar properties to modern orcish shields: its base protection is one point and it can rust. The small shield in NetHack 3.0.0 through 3.0.10 has similar properties; only in NetHack 3.1.0 does it become wooden.
• scroll of damage weapon -- in Hack 1.0 through NetHack 2.3e. Similar to the modern cursed scroll of enchant weapon.
• slice of pizza -- in NetHack 1.3d through 2.3e. Succeeded by the nameable fruit. Can also appear in NetHack 3.0.1 through 3.1.3, if the fruit option (TUTTI_FRUTTI) is not enabled.

Other defunct features

• Elf role -- in NetHack 1.3d through 3.2.3.
