A '''eucalyptus leaf''' is a vegan food item.  Eating it will cure sickness, and it can also be applied to use it as a whistle.  It will act as a [[magic whistle]] if blessed and a tin whistle otherwise.  There is a 2% chance that a blessed eucalyptus leaf will become uncursed after being used as a whistle.

''Eucalyptus'' is a genus of more than 700 species of flowering plants in the family Myrtaceae, with most species being trees (often mallees) and a few of them being shrubs. They are commonly known as eucalypts or "gum trees", and have bark that is either smooth, fibrous, hard or stringy; the leaves have glands that produce oil, and the fruit is a woody capsule commonly referred to as a "gumnut". Most species of Eucalyptus are native to Australia, and every state and territory has representative species - about three-quarters of Australian forests are eucalypt forests, and many eucalypt species have adapted to wildfires. A few species are native to islands north of Australia and a smaller number are only found outside the continent.

A eucalyptus leaf is a type of veggy comestible that appears in NetHack.

Generation

Tourists may start with eucalyptus among their random food items.[1]

Kicking a tree has a one-time 1415 chance of dropping (8−rnl(7)) eucalyptus leaves.[2] Cutting down a tree has a 15 chance of producing a piece of 'fruit' that can be a eucalyptus leaf.[3] If a tree is tunneled through, there is a 13 chance of 'fruit' being left behind, which can be a eucalyptus leaves.[4]

Applying a charged horn of plenty has a 0.3% chance of generating a eucalyptus leaf or two.[5]

Description

Eating a eucalyptus leaf confers 30 nutrition, and eating a non-cursed one will cure sickness and nausea.[6]

Applying a eucalyptus leaf treats it as a whistle: it acts as a magic whistle if blessed and a tin whistle otherwise, and there is a 150 chance of a blessed eucalyptus leaf becoming uncursed after applying it.[7]

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (NetHack 3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that it is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate this information.

The eucalyptus leaf now provides only 1 nutrition.

Strategy

If you have a stack of eucalyptus but have not yet discovered a magic whistle, the eucalyptus can be a useful substitute if dipped into holy water. Eucalyptus leaves can also act as a reliable sickness cure for later stages of the game.

There is a 19.4% chance of getting eucalyptus leaves from any given tree by kicking it until it produces food, then cutting it down - the odds of finding any are much better if you encounter a Big Room map, Medusa's Island map, or themed rooms containing lots of trees. Specific role Quests are also heavily populated by trees.

History

The eucalyptus leaf first appears in NetHack 3.3.0.

Origin

Eucalyptus is a genus of more than 700 species of flowering plants in the family Myrtaceae, with most species being trees (often mallees) and a few of them being shrubs.

The use of a eucalyptus leaf as a magic whistle is based on the Australian 1960s TV show Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, which has a recognizable theme call played on a eucalyptus leaf that causes Skippy to come bounding through the bush to whoever played it.
