Flint stones are the least interesting of the four kinds of gray stones, having no special powers or abilities. Their distinguishing feature is that they do 1d6 damage against small and large enemies when slung, instead of the 1d3 dealt by other gems and stones.
Their low value means that they can be price-identified to distinguish them from luckstones. Since Cavemen start the game with a stack of flint stones, they will automatically identify these.
Theoretically, eating a non-cursed flint stone would display the message "Yabba-dabba delicious!" and exercise your constitution.[1] However, since no monster in the game is lithivorous (able to eat stones),[2] this point is moot outside of variants. The message is a reference to the TV series The Flintstones, and to the Flintstones brand of children's vitamin tablets.
xNetHack
In xNetHack, flint stones' weight is reduced from 10 units to 1. Because xNetHack displays the weight of items in the inventory, this makes flint stones trivial to identify.
