The helm of opposite alignment is a helmet which will reverse your alignment when worn, with the message "Your mind oscillates briefly"; this results in the loss of any protection you have. Removing the helm (made difficult by its autocursing) will restore your original alignment (again removing protection).

Donning the helm as a lawful or chaotic character will swap between those two alignments; a neutral character will have their alignment set randomly to one of those two.

If your alignment has been changed in this fashion, you will not be able to do the quest as the quest leader will prevent you from entering. However, the helm has proven popular as a means of shortening the time spent on the Astral Plane - if one finds the high altar of opposite alignment they can don the helm to successfully ascend using that altar.
