A nickelpede, s, is a type of monster that appears in SLASH'EM, SlashTHEM and Hack'EM. It is a stronger relative of the centipede,

A nickelpede has a poisonous bite attack, and possesses poison resistance.

Eating a nickelpede corpse or tin has a 815 chance of conveying poison resistance.

Generation

Randomly generated nickelpedes are always created hostile, and are not generated in Gehennom.

Nickelpedes appear among the random s that are part of the first quest monster class for Tourists and make up 24175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Tourist quest. They also appear among the random s that are part of the second quest monster class for Rangers and make up 6175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Ranger quest.

Nickelpedes generated at level creation are given a random item to hide under.[1]

Strategy

While much more capable of inflicting damage compared to the standard centipede, nickelpedes are just as slow at 4 speed, and are not a significant threat to a character that can keep them away with projectiles and other ranged attacks. Nickelpedes are also similarly vulnerable to magic due to lacking any MR score, and their corpses can be a decent source of poison resistance for characters that lack the property.

Origin

The nickelpede is based on a pun of the words "cent" and "centipede", and is derived from the Xanth novels. In Currant Events, nickelpedes are described as "five times as bad as centipedes, gouging out nickel-sized disks of flesh".
