Sewage, referred to in game as a pool of raw sewage, is a dungeon feature that appears in NetHack Fourk, EvilHack and Hack'EM. In EvilHack and Hack'EM, it is represented by a green right curly bracket, }.

Generation

EvilHack

In the Gnomish Mines, each level that has a river created on its map has roughly a 50% chance of the river being sewage.

The Sewers of Waterdeep variant of Mines' End is a sewage-filled level where The Rat King dwells.

Giant cockroaches and giant leeches are only randomly generated on levels with raw sewage at level creation.

Hack'EM

In Hack'EM, rivers of sewage are much more likely to occur in the Mines, and the Sewers of Waterdeep map for Mines' End may still generate.

Kicking toilets has a 117 chance of generating several squares of sewage along with giant cockroaches.

Description

Sewage functions similarly to shallow water, allowing characters and monsters to walk through without falling in, though some pieces of worn armor will be subjected to rusting. In addition, the character's movement is slowed temporarily unless one of the following applies:

  • The character has flight, levitation or water walking.
  • The character is a tortle of any kind.
  • The character is wearing either blue or white dragon-scaled armor. Blue-scaled armor prevents slowing effects, while white-scaled armor freezes sewage, water and lava underfoot.
  • The character is wearing boots that have the appearance]] of "mud boots".

Dipping any item into a pool of raw sewage has a chance of the item being stolen by an unknown creature and lost forever - this will not occur with wearable items that are cursed and welded to the character, heavy iron balls that are chained to the character, or any indestructible items.
