A spellcasting focus is an item in dNetHack that can increase the player's chance of spellcasting successfully when wielded. Several different items are focuses. Some focuses increase the success rate of all spells, while others are limited to associated spell schools.

Non-artifact Focuses

  • Khakkharas improve the success rate of cleric and healing spells. In the hands of a Priest or a Monk they improve the success rate of all spells.
  • Bells improve the success rate of cleric and healing spells. In the hands of a Priest they improve the success rate of all spells.
  • Scalpels improve the success rate of healing spells.
  • Crystal balls improve the success rate of divination spells.
  • Quarterstaffs improve the success rate of attack spells.
  • Shepherd's crooks improve the success rate of enchantment spells.
  • Athames improve the success rate of attack and enchantment spells.
  • In the hands of a Wizard Wands improve the success rate of all spells.

Artifact Focuses

  • The Tentacle Rod, Aryfaern Kerym, Profaned Greatscythe, and Garnet Rod improve the success rate of all spells.
  • The Death Spear of Vhaerun improves the success rate of attack spells, but only for drow characters that began the game as males.
  • Callandor improves the success rate of all spells, but only for characters that began the game as males.
