::It would be good to have a source on the 40%. Source diving for special levels is tricky, so I'm not ''entirely'' sure that this is it, but line 10 of dat/dungeon.pdf (it's a plain text file, not a pdf) is <code>RNDLEVEL:      "bigrm" "B" @ (10, 3) 40 10</code>. doc/dgn_comp.6, which appears to define the grammar for this file, states that the form for this command is <code>RNDLEVEL: name bonesmarker @ (base, rand) [ percentage ] rndlevs</code>. So the big room is named "bigrm", with bones code B, it generates in a 3-level range starting at 10, it has a 40% chance of generating and 10 variants. I'm not sure how to cite a source from dat and doc though. --[[User:Phol ende wodan|Phol ende wodan]] ([[User talk:Phol ende wodan|talk]]) 02:47, 20 July 2016 (UTC)

First version to have Big Room?

I seem to recall having Big Room #1 in some generation of 3.0 when playing on an Amiga in the early 90s. The version I played had a Big Room, but no Mines or Quests and Rodney had the AoY in his possession. However, this article and also the article on 3.1.1 claim that the Big Room first appeared in 3.1.1. Some verification is needed. - posted by John, unregistered.

Does Big Room always exist?

I seem to recall reading somewhere that there is only a 33.3% chance of the Big Room appearing in any particular game. Is this still true? Skelwing 18:48, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

I know it's possible for a dungeon to lack a big room. The NetHack Gazetteer claims that there's a 40% chance of there being one in any particular game. -- Killian 05:14, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
It would be good to have a source on the 40%. Source diving for special levels is tricky, so I'm not entirely sure that this is it, but line 10 of dat/dungeon.pdf (it's a plain text file, not a pdf) is RNDLEVEL: "bigrm" "B" @ (10, 3) 40 10. doc/dgn_comp.6, which appears to define the grammar for this file, states that the form for this command is RNDLEVEL: name bonesmarker @ (base, rand) [ percentage ] rndlevs. So the big room is named "bigrm", with bones code B, it generates in a 3-level range starting at 10, it has a 40% chance of generating and 10 variants. I'm not sure how to cite a source from dat and doc though. --Phol ende wodan (talk) 02:47, 20 July 2016 (UTC)

never seen it!

I've never seen a big room and I've been playing Nethack for ages. Is this unusual?

Given the large amount of random features, almost anybody hasn't seen all of them. People usually only take note of the few features they haven't yet seen, so it isn't that unusual. -Tjr 10:48, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Favorite wizmode playground - is this really relevant?

Some debuggers like to use the big room with plugged entrances and exits (done by creating a 3x3 pile of boulders centered on both staircases) to prevent monster entrance and exit.
