#annotate is a extended command in NetHack that allows a player to specify a single-line text annotation and associate it with the current dungeon level that their hero is on.

Description

A level annotated with this command will print a message each time the player character enters (or restores a game on) the level - annotations made using this command are visible via the #overview extended command. Annotating a single space will remove the annotation from the current level.

Preceding the #overview command with the "m" prefix, i.e. m#overview, allows editing of annotations on any level.

Strategy

Annotation is used to leave helpful messages for later parts of the game, such as messages indicating the presence of co-aligned unicorns, warnings to watch out for nasty monsters (e.g. mind flayer, arch-lich, etc.), floors with vaults, or the location of the entrance to the Wizard's Tower.

History

Annotations first appear in NetHack 3.6.0. Before 5.0, Amnesia could erase annotations from the character's memory.
