A crystal sword is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The crystal sword is a large melee weapon, making it two-handed for a medium-sized wielder, and uses the long sword skill. It has a default material of glass unless otherwise specified during object creation.

The crystal sword is the base item for the artifact Callandor, and the artifact Arcor Kerym is an iron crystal sword.

Generation

Crystal swords are rare and make up 1500 (0.2%) of all weapons that are randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops. Used armor dealerships and antique weapon outlets can also stock high-elven warswords, as can the sand-walker's shops run by selkies in Elshava—the crystal sword is the only type of weapon in a sandwalker's shop that will not be made of silver.

Fire Brand and Frost Brand can be generated or wished for in crystal sword form, and can be reshaped into a crystal sword by dipping the artifact into a forge or fountain respectively—this reshaping requires the hero to either have a crystal sword in their inventory or be at least Skilled in long swords.

The historic statues of Shiere Eladrin that are found at the top of the Arcadian Tower on the Law Quest will each contain a crystal sword.

In the Mordor variant of the Chaos Quest, one of the chests in the room directly west of the ogre emperor's throne contains a crystal sword that has the unruly object property.

Crystal swords can be generated in the magic item vaults within the Avatar of Lolth's lair during level creation if the lair appears as the second Abyss level.

Some monsters can be generated with crystal swords:

Description

A crystal sword inflicts piercing and slashing damage, dealing 2d8 against small monsters and 2d12 against large monsters (both doubling the dice of a normal long sword), and adds a flat damage bonus to its enchantment equal to 13 of that value rounded down. A crystal sword can be poisoned by dipping it in an appropriate potion. Crystal swords made of glass are fragile unless they are erosion-proofed.

A hero that wields a crystal sword while they are at Skilled or better in long swords gains the "graze", "focus fire" and "stop thrust" expert traits. Engraving with a crystal sword will not cause it to become dull and lose enchantment, and it can also be used to engrave on grass, sand and soil squares.

In terms of monster weapon preference, monsters will favor a crystal sword over a church-hammer, and will prefer a rod of force or better to the crystal sword.

History

The crystal sword first appears in dNetHack 3.10.0.

From dNetHack versions 3.21.3.1 to 3.24.0, and in versions of notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack that are derived from them, the crystal sword is not an eligible base item for Fire Brand or Frost Brand.
