An effigy is a type of tool that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a tiny and ensouled magical item that has a default material of leather.

Generation

Effigies make up 150 (2%) of all tools that are randomly generated on the ground, in shops and as death drops.

Zhi ren monks have a 120 chance of leaving behind a paper effigy as a special death drop in lieu of a corpse.

Description

A hero can apply an effigy to cure several of their negative status properties and "troubles" in the order listed below, with the amount applied depending on which negative properties the effigy removes from the hero:

  1. The effigy will remove curses and end punishment as a blessed scroll of remove curse does, and will also uncurse a steed's cursed saddle that the hero is currently stuck on. This will unbind the spirit Marionette if the hero has it bound when applying the effigy, regardless of if any actual curse removal occurs.
  2. If the hero's sanity is under 100, it is restored by a value equal to half the difference rounded down.
  3. If the hero is covered by orc-mud or caterpillars, is bleeding, has a cumulative drain of 19 or more maximum HP, or any combination of these ailments, the effigy will change appearance accordingly to reflect each one before curing it (including any HP loss inflicted by previous bleeding).
  4. If the hero has any weeping angel contamination, it will be fully cured—a contamination level of 10 or more will also cause the effigy to grow into a weeping angel that is placed adjacent to the hero.
  5. If the hero has morgul-shards embedded within them, they are all removed and the hero is given an amount of cursed metal "lesser morgul" shuriken equivalent to the amount of shards they were afflicted with. This does not occur if curing the hero's weeping angel contamination causes the effigy to become a weeping angel itself.
  6. A hero plagued by doubt will have it entirely cured.
  7. Mummy rot is completely cured.
  8. Penalties from curses inflicted to the hero's HP, energy, carrying capacity, damage, and AC are reduced by half of their respective values.
  9. If the used effigy has not been transformed into a weeping angel, it is finally used up.

A wielded effigy improves the success rate of clerical and healing spells, and improves the success rate of all spells for Healers and Priests.

As an ensouled item, a hero cannot place an effigy inside a crystal skull.

Strategy

Effigies are valuable tools to have for heroes that have the misfortune of fighting Lamashtu, or else are overwhelmed with doubt by either a swarm of lilitu that they cannot get away from or a lilitu in the Avatar of Lolth's lair that was disguised as a coaligned temple's priest.

Encyclopedia entry

An effigy is a representation of a specific person in the form of
sculpture or some other three-dimensional medium. The use of the
term is normally restricted to certain contexts in a somewhat
arbitrary way: recumbent effigies on tombs are so called, but
standing statues of individuals, or busts, are usually not.

all varieties of curses afflicting the invoker.
