Forum:What NetHack mod is right for me?

I kind of like the game NetHack, but I got a mod called Slash'EM, hoping it was going to be NetHack with extra awesomeness.

However, the place I got it from (hopefully it's not Slash'EM itself) forced me to use the freaking tiles mode. I like the feel the text interface gives.

I wonder, what NetHack mod is right for me? Slash'EM, UnNetHack, SporkHack, dNetHack, DynaHack, or even NetHack brass?

I prefer a lighthearted game, nothing too serious. I like to see random things like "killed by elementary physics" and I loved reading the fortune cookie messages (especially the "They say" ones).

The Dev Team Thinks Of Everything was a great idea, and gave NetHack depth.

I especially like the customizable fruit and the fact that you can name your pets (even though I disabled the pet in the config file)

I mainly want to do crazy things, but trying to ascend is another thing for me.

I don't think I'll like Angband or other rogues.

Please ask questions if you need more info. 96.58.134.9 02:13, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

Yay, I'm the first one to answer this! :D Yeah, SLASH'EM is basically Nethack with extra awesomeness and lots of extra stuff, but there's something even better. It's called Slash'EM Extended, doesn't force the player to use annoying tiles and has everything SLASH'EM has, plus a ton and a half of extra stuff, and then some. It also has everything and the kitchen sink, and if you liked SLASH'EM, you'll probably like Slash'EM Extended too. If you want to give it a try, this link lets you download the Windows binary (unfortunately I can't port it to another OS yet - yes, I'm the dev team): https://app.box.com/s/bjmryzddy3t7llv6jekb

I like the map generator in UnNetHack. --Timco (talk) 07:33, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
Try playing as a doppleganger in slash'em or variant, there's a ton of neat & random stuff you can do when assuming monster forms. My current favourite dopey trick is to polymorph into a giant scorpion, lay a bunch of eggs, then when they hatch poly into a genetic engineer and smack them barehand to produce an army of randomised pets. It's no ascension trick but a good laugh. [edit.. Wear gloves if you try this. Creating a stoning monster can cause instadeath] --81.149.28.173 12:04, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
UnNetHack is a good choice. Doesn't force tiles, adds a lot of stuff, but tries to keep the tone/balance the same as vanilla, which SLASH'EM can't really claim (though that adds more stuff). --Ozymandias (talk) 17:12, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
