This article is about the informal "hunger" property. For other uses of the term, see hunger.

Voracious hunger, also known simply as hunger, is a property in NetHack that increases the rate at which a hero burns nutrition.

The only source of the voracious hunger property is putting on or eating a ring of hunger.

Description

While a hero has the voracious hunger property, the rate at which their nutrition normally decreases is accelerated by 50%.[1] This effect stacks with the accelerated hunger rate from other properties, such as conflict granted by the ring of conflict and regeneration granted by the ring of regeneration. Slow digestion does not cancel out this effect.

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (NetHack 3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that the information below is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate it.

As of commit 50084750, hunger prevents a hero from choking on food when oversatiated by making them vomit, similar to the breathless property, but this will always leave them with 60 nutrition.

Strategy

An extrinsic source of voracious hunger is occasionally useful when you want to stop being satiated, in order to avoid dexterity penalties or eat more corpses. The property is usually considered bad to have as an intrinsic, and a tinning kit is preferable for managing corpse consumption and nutrition.

Variants

GruntHack

In GruntHack, hunger is an object property that can occur on some pieces of armor, and those items will grant the voracious hunger property while worn.

FIQHack

In FIQHack, hunger is one of the intrinsic properties a non-cursed potion of wonder can grant the hero when quaffed, and dipping an appropriate item in a non-cursed potion also has a chance of randomly bestowing hunger as an object property.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, hobbit and giant heroes start each game with voracious hunger.

Hunger is an object property that can occur on armor and weapons, and those items will grant the voracious hunger property while worn or wielded.
