A pancake is a type of comestible that appears in NetHack. It is veggy and considered vegetarian.

Generation

Tourists may start with pancakes among their random food items.[1]

Pancakes make up 140 (2.5%) of all comestibles randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops. Delicatessens and health food stores can also stock pancakes.

Applying a charged horn of plenty has a 231000 chance (2.3%) of generating a pancake or two.[2]

Description

Eating a pancake grants 200 nutrition and takes 2 turns to fully consume it.

Pancakes are considered "people food" and can be thrown to tame domestic canines and felines—tame carnivores will only eat pancakes if hungry, while tame herbivores will only eat pancakes if starving.

Strategy

The pancake has a nutrition/weight ratio of 100, tying it with the lump of royal jelly for the second most weight-efficient food a hero can carry—incidentally, both foods are vegetarian-friendly but not vegan-friendly.

History

The pancake first appears in Hack for PDP-11, which is based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, and is included in the initial food list for Hack 1.0.

Origin

A pancake, also known as a hotcake, griddlecake, or flapjack, is a flat type of batter bread-like cake that is often thin and round, It is prepared from a starch-based batter that may contain eggs, milk, and butter, and then cooked on a hot surface such as a griddle or frying pan. Archaeological evidence suggests that pancakes were probably eaten in prehistoric societies. Commercially-prepared pancake mixes are available in some countries, and frozen pancakes are also available from companies like Eggo.

Pancakes may be served at any time of the day or year with a variety of toppings or fillings, but they have developed associations with particular times and toppings in different regions, and their shape and structure vary worldwide. In North America, they are typically considered a breakfast food and serve a similar function to waffles. In Britain and the Commonwealth, they are associated with Shrove Tuesday, commonly known as "Pancake Day", when, historically, perishable ingredients had to be used up before the fasting period of Lent.
