Player monster (EvilHack)

In EvilHack, player monsters are a far more frequent sight in the main dungeon and its branches compared to NetHack, where a mass majority of them are encountered on the Astral Plane.

Player monsters are defined separately from how the actual player character is defined in monst.c, and are given hit dice, monster difficulty and monster level values that roughly match those of the actual hero at the time of generation. They are also racial monsters, and will have intrinsics and abilities roughly matching a hero of the same race and role as them: for example, a priest or wizard will cast spells, while a rogue can steal items, and knights can use the same jumping ability as a Knight hero.

List of player monsters

The following player monsters correspond to each of the available roles, including different-gendered titles:

Generation

Randomly generated player monsters will be hostile or peaceful to the hero entirely depending on their race, role and alignment: a chaotic gnomish Wizard may find the local dwarven archeologist to be peaceful, but will also find orcish barbarians distinctly unwelcoming.

A player monster is 13 as likely to be generated as any other monster during random monster creation.

Inventory

The initial inventory of a player monster varies heavily with their race, role and monster level.

Steeds

Like other monsters in EvilHack, some player monsters can generate riding upon steeds—this is primarily the domain of knights, who will generate riding a horse at level 10 or a warhorse at level 20.

Other characteristics

All player monsters that are hostile to the hero covet the Amulet of Yendor, and can steal it from the hero with their melee attacks. A player monster that obtains the Amulet of Yendor in some manner while on the Astral Plane will attempt to sacrifice it at the high altar of their god—success will end the game in a loss for the hero.
