The xan or other mythical/fantastic insect, also known simply as the mythical insect or fantastic insect, is a monster class that appears in NetHack, and is represented by the lowercase x glyph, x. It is designated internally by the macro S_XAN.[1]

The monster class is composed only of the following two monsters:[2]

History

The xan first appears in Hack 1.0, while the grid bug first appears in NetHack 3.0.6.

Variants

SLASH'EM

SLASH'EM adds the electric bugs to the monster class:

All three monsters are essentially stronger grid bugs, possessing a shocking bite attack that can destroy rings and wands in your inventory. Additionally, the grid bug and all electric bugs can hit as enchanted weapons.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack, two monsters are added to the monster class:
