- For the artifact in the Pirate patch by Chris and in other variants of NetHack, see The Marauder's Map.
The Marauder's Map is the Pirate quest artifact in the original Pirate role patch by Nephi. It is the prize for completing the Pirate quest, and its default alignment is chaotic. Its base item type is a scroll of magic mapping.
Generation
The Marauder's Map does not normally generate in the versions of the patch available for download, due to the lack of quest levels. For Pirates, The Marauder's Map is intended to always generated on the goal level of the Pirate quest, where it is placed on the same square as the Major General along with the Bell of Opening. If a Pirate loads a bones level containing the quest artifact, it would always be reverted to its base item.
Description
A hero reading The Marauder's Map will map the current dungeon level they are on with the same effects as a normal scroll of magic mapping of the same beatitude, but the artifact will not be used up afterward—as an artifact, The Marauder's Map also cannot be subjected to blanking or destroyed by fire. While wielded, The Marauder's Map grants searching and telepathy (designed to simulate reading the Map more directly).
Invoking The Marauder's Map grants object detection as with a potion of the same beatitude, marking the locations of all items that are currently on the level.
Origin
The Marauder's Map is a magical item from Harry Potter, a franchise originating from a series of seven fantasy novels written by British author Joanne Rowling (who is sometimes known by "Joanne Murray" and the pen name "J. K. Rowling"). The novels chronicle the lives of the titular young wizard as he attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and learns of his connection to Lord Voldemort, a dark wizard who intends to become immortal and subjugate the wizarding world and "mundane" world alike.
Within the setting, the Marauder's Map is a magical map of Hogwarts created by a group of wizards while they were still students at the school, and Harry is given the map in the third book by his best friend's twin brothers so he can travel to Hogsmeade through a hidden passageway. The map is a blank piece of parchment when not in use, but it becomes a detailed layout of Hogwarts when it is activated using the phrase "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good". It shows the locations of secret passages and instructions on how to access them, and it also reveals the presence and identity of every individual at Hogwarts by not only marking their exact location alongside their names, but also tracking their movements in real-time. This is why The Marauder's Map in the Pirate patch is represented by a scroll of magic mapping, and additionally why the artifact grants searching and telepathy while wielded.
