Veioistafur stave

In dNetHack, notdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack, the veioistafur stave is a ward which scares ; sea monster. Unlike regular wards, staves must be carved with a edged weapon into another weapon, which must be made of wood. A veioistafur stave carved weapon must be dropped on the floor at the hero's feet to ward off monsters. The veioistafur stave takes 5 turns, and cannot be reinforced further. A weapon carved with a veioistafur stave gains +4 to hit and +1d20 damage against sea monsters.

Generation

¹⁄₄₀₀ of all wooden weapons are generated with a veioistafur stave carving. Wood weapons engraved with a veioistafur stave cannot be wished for.

Dwarf heros both start the game with knowledge of the veioistafur stave.

Veioistafur staves only appear in spellbooks of level 3 and above.

The odds of a spellbook containing a veioistafur stave are:

• Level 3 spellbooks: ¹⁄₁₂ (~8.33%) chance.
• Level 4 spellbooks: ⁷⁄₁₀₈ (~6.48%) chance.
• Level 5 spellbooks: ¹⁄₁₆ (6.25%) chance.
• Level 6 spellbooks: ⁵⁄₇₂ (~6.92) chance.
• Does not appear in level 7 spellbooks.
