The Star of Hypernotus is the Madman quest artifact in dNetHack and notdNetHack, and is the prize for completing the Madman quest. Its default alignment is neutral, and its base item is an amulet versus curses made of star sapphire. It appears as a blue-green star-shaped stone when unidentified, or a blue-green star-shaped star sapphire when star sapphires are type-identified. The amulet appearance is never shown.
Description
While carried, The Star of Hypernotus confers immunity to confusion and grants clear thoughts, which treats your sanity as always being at the maximum of 100 for any effects that check your sanity level. This means that both chance-based and guaranteed madness effects are entirely ignored or suppressed, and you will never suffer the negative effects from suddenly losing sanity (such as screaming or panicking). This does not affect your actual sanity level, so it will continue to go up or down as expected. You can also still gain madnesses while your thoughts are clear, they will just have no effect. When clear thoughts is lost (such as by dropping the Star), your madnesses will resume immediately - which can be very dangerous at low sanity.
However, clear thoughts has one weakness - walking nightmares. If you are suffering from nightmares, like from wearing the War-helm of the Dreaming, your insanity (the difference of your sanity and 100) is treated as 1/5th of what it should be. This means that every 5 points of sanity loss is actually one point, so 0 sanity is 80 effective sanity. In addition, the effects of losing sanity are no longer suppressed, but they will scale with the lessened insanity and last only 1/5th as long as normal.
The Star of Hypernotus is engraved with a six-fold elder sign, and can be applied towards monsters to attempt to scare them.
Picking up The Star of Hypernotus for the first time will cause the Stranger to begin stalking you.
Trivia
Star sapphires are a specific type of sapphire that exhibit thin needle-like inclusions in the shape of star, inside the stone. The star-shaped on the Star of Hypernotus refers to how it is made from a star sapphire, but carved into the shape of a star.
