An illithid, h, is a type of monster that appears in EvilHack and Hack'EM. The illithid is a humanoid-class monster that acts as a placeholder for illithid racial monsters. Like other illithids, they are strong, possess telepathy and infravision, can be seen via infravision, and will pick up gems, gold and other items that they come across. In EvilHack, illithids that generate as player monsters will also have flight as illithid heroes of experience level 12 or greater do, while in Hack'EM all illithids have flight in order to match the illithid race's starting flight.
An illithid has a weapon attack and an intelligence-draining tentacle attack, and possesses psychic resistance.
Eating an illithid corpse or tin has a 1⁄2 chance of increasing the hero's intelligence by 1 if it is below their maximum for that attribute, and will otherwise grant telepathy if they do not have it. Monsters that eat illithid corpses can gain telepathy.
Generation
Illithids are not randomly generated, and are not valid polymorph forms or genocide targets.
Illithid shopkeepers have a 1⁄5 chance of being generated as the shopkeepers of rare books shops and second-hand bookstores.
Illithid player monsters can be generated as convicts, infidels, priests, and wizards.
Encyclopedia entry
This creature has a humanoid body, tentacles around its
covered mouth, and three long fingers on each hand. Mind
flayers are telepathic, and love to devour intelligent beings,
especially humans. If they hit their victim with a tentacle,
the mind flayer will slowly drain it of all intelligence,
eventually killing its victim.
