The Shard from Morgoth's Crown is an artifact that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is chaotic and appears as a twisted band of jagged iron: its base item is a ring with the randomized appearance of an "iron ring", and if the iron ring is a ring of polymorph in the current game, then it will appear as a twisted ring instead.

Generation

The Shard from Morgoth's Crown cannot be wished for, though it can be found in bones.

The Shard from Morgoth's Crown is only generated on the Mordor Ruins Quest, where the cursed artifact is always placed on the last floor of the Borehole on the square of the Lungorthin at level creation—if the artifact is generated as a ring that can be charged, its enchantment will be +4.

Description

While carried, The Shard from Morgoth's Crown grants magic resistance, and a hero that puts on the ring will also gain shock resistance and the usual effects of the ring with that appearance, along with several other bonuses: +6 to all attribute scores while worn (which bypasses racial maximums and has a separate maximum of 25), a +6 AC bonus, a +3 DR bonus to all slots (which is a total of +6 for the hero's head and hands), +6 to the maximum amount of pets a hero can keep tamed, and +1d9 corrupted holy damage to all attacks against holy-hating and unholy-hating monsters (though it will only display messages for unarmed attacks).
