A barking spider is a monster added in SLASH'EM. As the name suggests, they will make the same noises as a dog when #chatted with.

Strategy

Barking spiders are generally not a threat: their attacks are not poisonous, unlike the similar giant spider, and the damage they do is quite low. They are faster than an unhasted player, but overall they are little more threatening than a giant ant or killer bee.

Origin

"Barking spider" is a common name for several related species of tarantula from Australia, deriving from the loud hissing sound they make when approached. Unlike SLASH'EM's barking spiders, they do not produce the full range of dog noises.

Encyclopedia Entry

Eight legged creature capable of spinning webs to trap prey.

"You mean you eat flies?" gasped Wilbur.
"Certainly. Flies, bugs, grasshoppers, choice beetles,
moths, butterflies, tasty cockroaches, gnats, midges, daddy
longlegs, centipedes, mosquitoes, crickets - anything that is
careless enough to get caught in my web. I have to live,
don't I?"
"Why, yes, of course," said Wilbur.
