Appearance
The broadsword is a different name for the basket-hilted sword. It's a sword with a basket shaped guard that protects the hand. The term "Broad" contrast with the similar but slender rapier.
The cross-guard was improved as the development of firearms made armor obsolete(armored gantlets and shield).
