The duergar is a monster added in SLASH'EM. It is basically a dwarf lord that is generated only in Gehennom.

Generation

Due to their low difficulty, duergar will never actually generate in Gehennom. Very rarely, some of the random h in the Gnomish Mines may be duergar (a la minesflayers), although this is extremely uncommon.

They are a valid polymorph form, so they can occasionally appear that way, although since monster polymorph in SLASH'EM is temporary these will never be "real" duergar. Theoretically, one could generate "real" duergar through reverse genocide or casting stone-to-flesh on a wished-for statue, although there would be little point to doing either.

Strategy

In theory, a weapon-wielding monster that polymorphs into a duergar could pose some danger; in practice this is incredibly unlikely, and even then one can simply walk away from them.
