Meat rings are normally accidental creation and are mostly useless, as they provide low nutrition and no effects as per other rings. Since they count as comestibles, they cannot be polymorphed into other rings.

In some situations, however, deliberately creating a meat ring may actually come in handy. If a mineral or gemstone ring is cursed and the player lacks other means of uncursing or has no need for the uncursed item, they can drop all other mineral and gemstone items and then cast stone to flesh on themselves. This will turn the ring into a cursed meat ring that remains on their finger; the ring can then be eaten off, even if wielding a cursed, two-handed weapon. Naturally, cursed comestibles may cause the character to vomit, be blinded or confused due to the curse, so be prepared to recover from these ill effects.

Alternatively, meat rings count as treats for carnivorous domestic pets;  mineral or gemstone "junk" rings (such as rings of hunger) can be turned into meat rings and thrown, primarily to raise the pet's apport. This is a poor use for junk rings, however, as all rings except meat rings can be polymorphed into different rings, presumably in an attempt to get to better ones from the polyfodder. For accidentally created, non-cursed meat rings, this is usually the best use for such an item.

A meat ring is a comestible that appears in NetHack. It gives 5 nutrition when eaten.

Generation

Meat rings are only generated by casting stone to flesh at a ring that is made of mineral or gemstone material. It can be worn like a normal ring, but will not do anything.

List of mineral and gemstone rings

Rings with the following appearances can be turned into meat rings:

 • agate
 • black onyx
 • clay
 • coral
 • diamond
 • emerald
 • granite
 • jade
 • moonstone
 • opal
 • ruby
 • sapphire
 • tiger eye
 • topaz

Strategy

Meat rings are usually accidental creations and provide very little nutrition; since they count as comestibles, they cannot be polymorphed into other rings.

A viable method for removing cursed mineral or gemstone rings when the player lacks other means of uncursing or has no need for the uncursed item(s) is to drop all other mineral and gemstone items and then cast stone to flesh on themselves. The ring(s) can then be eaten freely, though it will still have the adverse effects of Food#rotten food, so be prepared to recover from these ill effects.

Meat rings also count as treats for carnivorous pets, and can be used to raise the pet's apport - this is the best use for accidentally-made meat rings, since "junk" rings can simply be used as polyfodder.
