Orihalcyon gauntlets are a type of armor that appear in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. They are gloves that have a base material of metal, and have a randomized appearance when unidentified—the default one associated with them is a pair of fighting gloves.
Description
While worn, a pair of orihalcyon gauntlets confers 1 AC and magic resistance, while also heavily interfering with spellcasting due to its material.
Strategy
As a source of magic resistance, orihalcyon gauntlets provide immunity to wands of striking and magic missile as well as many of the nastier traps.
Identification
A touchstone can be used to unambiguously identify orihalcyon gauntlets: the only other metallic gloves are the gauntlets of power, which are made of iron and also auto-identify when worn.
Origin
The concept of orihalcyon gauntlets comes from the (sadly defunct) webcomic Bookwyrms, with the name being a portmanteau of 'orichalcum' and 'halcyon'.
