A rakuyo is a type of one-handed weapon that appears in dNetHack and notdNetHack. It is made of iron and uses the saber skill, and appears as a double-bladed saber when unidentified.

A rakuyo is composed of a saber and a dagger latched together at their pommels (pointing in opposite directions). If you are wielding a rakuyo in your main hand, you can (a)pply it to unlatch it. This leaves a rakuyo-saber in your main hand and pops off a rakuyo-dagger that immediately goes into your off-hand and starts being wielded. If unidentified, these two weapons appear as a latch-pommeled saber and a latch-pommeled dagger, respectively. It is also possible to latch the saber and dagger together again.

The Blade Singer's Saber is an artifact rakuyo. When unlatched, the rakuyo-saber in your main hand retains its identity as the Blade Singer's Saber, and the rakuyo-dagger in your off-hand becomes an artifact called the Blade Dancer's Dagger.

Object property

"Rakuyo" is also the name of an object property. All rakuyos and their components have this object property. Additionally, yuki-onna madwomen can find a katana and wakizashi with this property in their quest.

Weapons with this property are insight weapons, meaning that they gain additional to-hit and damage dice when used by Madmen or any role with Ose bound, scaling with the player's insight and experience level. They additionally have special effects that can be used by any role with sufficient insight:

  • At 15 or 20 insight, they become "blood-drenched", which causes damage to enemies behind the one you hit.
  • At roughly 40 insight, they become "Burning", and cause 3x3 fire explosions behind the target you hit.

Origin

The rakuyo originates from Bloodborne, a video game developed by FromSoftware.

The extra blood and fire effects of weapons with the rakuyo property at high insight are based on attacks performed by Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower using her rakuyo, during her boss fight in Bloodborne.
