Ose, Dreamer in a Drowned City is a spirit that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack.

Ritual, seal and taboo

Ose's seal must be drawn underwater, and can only be addressed via chatting by a submerged hero—the water is drained away as part of the ritual. Her seal may be drawn and used on dry land in the Lost Cities.

A hero bound to Ose must not fall into water.

Mark

A hero with Ose bound has a gaze that carries tangible weight, and its force can be felt from a distance. The hero can hide this effect by blinding themselves or wearing a metallic helm that is not a helm of telepathy. For all heroes that are not Wizards or incantifiers, a cornuthaum will work as well.

Benefits

While bound, Ose grants immunity to death effects and skill in tridents.

Ose's active powers are as follows:

  • Querient Thoughts: The hero can release a blast of psychic static that damages all telepathic monsters on the level, and can also damage non-telepathic monsters with a 15 chance of occurring for each monster.
  • Great Leap: The hero can level teleport at the cost of 625 nutrition.

Ose's passive powers are as follows:

  • Plain Leap: The hero is capable of jumping.
  • Maddening Thoughts: The hero gain a bonus to certain weapons based on their insight, as if they were a Madperson.
  • Opened Mind: The hero casts spells using their charisma score.

As a monster

In notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, Ose, @, also appears as a monster that can be summoned by an Illithanachronounbinder. Ose is a neutral human that is amphibious, unbreathing, strong, and is an overlord to her kind; she can see invisible, is capable of flight, will pick up and collect items, and can follow the hero to other levels if she is adjacent. Like many spirits, she cannot be tamed.

Ose has a weapon attack, a sleep-inducing breath weapon and a claw attack that can splash targets with Lethe water, and she possesses fire resistance, poison resistance and stoning resistance.

Generation

Ose is first generated when summoned from her seal by an Illithanachronounbinder. She is always created hostile, and is not a valid polymorph form or genocide target.

Ose is generated with a +9 misty mithril trident, high-elven gauntlets, high-elven plate, a high-elven helm, and a shield of reflection.

Ose does not leave a corpse upon death.

Strategy

Ose's natural 14 points of AC (or -4) is further bolstered by the high-elven armor she wears, and the reflection from her shield makes several types of ray attacks ineffective. She can also move at 15 speed and has the maximum MR score of 100.

If Ose is killed after being summoned, she can be encountered again in the Void, a branch accessed by opening the high altar of Ilsensine the Fallen as an Illithanachronounbinder using the invoke effect of The Elder Cerebral Fluid. Ose is placed randomly along with many other spirits of the near void on the second floor of the branch, and is generated with the "whispers" template, which makes her nonliving.
