Solid rock is a terrain type that is impossible to dig through (as opposed to a wall). Solid rock is used as a border that goes around a dungeon level in a rectangular fashion to prevent unneeded amounts of digging.

Attempting to dig into solid rock in the Dungeons of Doom will yield the message 'This wall is too hard to dig into.' Attempting to dig into solid rock in the Gnomish Mines will yield the message 'Clash!'.
