Reading a Spellbook of knock allows the player to cast the knock spell. This will unlock doors and containers, as well as revealing hidden doors. The effect is an exact duplicate of that of the wand of opening.[1] Since a lock pick or skeleton key has a similar effect but doesn't cost power, this spell is almost useless, and is usually thrown away, polypiled, or overwritten. However, it can be used to practice matter spells in preparation for casting more powerful such spells later (notably polymorph); to open the Castle drawbridge; to expose secret doors whose locations are known to the player but not the character; or to unlock doors slightly faster than a key would manage (this is mostly only useful on the Astral Plane, though, and a marginal benefit even there). Knock will also cause engulfing monsters to expel you, making it useful on the Plane of Air.

SLASH'EM

In slash'em, they are new indestructible doors at the top level of Vlad's Tower. This spell has no effect on them, there is no message, and nothing happens. Otherwise, the rest is exactly the same.
