The xan or other mythical/fantastic insect is a monster class that appears in NetHack, and is represented by the lowercase x glyph, x. It is designated internally by the macro S_XAN.[1]

History
The xan first appears in Hack 1.0, while the grid bug first appears in NetHack 3.0.6.
Variants
SLASH'EM
SLASH'EM adds the electric bugs to the monster class:
- x spark bug
- x arc bug
- x lightning bug
All three monsters are essentially stronger grid bugs, possessing a shocking bite attack that can destroy rings and wands in your inventory.
