A yumi is a type of launcher weapon that appears in NetHack, and is a bow designed for use with ya. It appears as a long bow when unidentified.

Samurai start with a +0 yumi and a stack of ya to use as ammo.[1]
Description
Samurai get +1 to-hit, multishot and damage bonuses when firing ya from a yumi.[2][3][4] For other roles, it is essentially the same as a normal bow.
Strategy
The yumi provides a stellar ranged option for Samurai in the early game.
History
The yumi is introduced in NetHack 3.1.0; in previous versions, Samurai instead started with a stack of shuriken.[5]
Origin
As used in English, yumi refers more specifically to traditional Japanese asymmetrical bows, which includes the longer daikyū and the shorter hankyū used in the practice of kyūdō and kyūjutsu, or Japanese archery.
The yumi was an important weapon of the samurai warrior during the feudal period of Japan, and was typically shot with the Japanese arrows known as ya. Their designed had evolved from maruki yumi that date back to pre-3rd century CE: these were constructed with small saplings or tree limbs, and came in various sizes, with the majority of them being short with a centre grip. The first written record of the asymmetrical yumi appears in the Book of Wei, a Chinese historical manuscript dating to the 3rd century CE—the oldest one found to date was discovered in Nara Prefecture and estimated to be from the 5th century. The yumi underwent a change in length and construction method during the the Heian period (794–1185), then again to a two-piece bamboo-and-wood laminated yumi by the end of the 10th century—its construction evolved over the next several hundred years, and settled into its modern design by the 16th century.
