A baby shimmering dragon, D, is a type of monster that appears in SLASH'EM and SlashTHEM. It is a juvenile shimmering dragon: like its adult form, it lacks displacement (which is not implemented for monsters in SLASH'EM), but has notably better AC than other baby dragons. Like all dragons, baby shimmering dragons are strong, carnivorous, thick-skinned, and capable of flight - they will also seek out gold and gems to pick up among other items.
Baby shimmering dragons have a single bite attack, and are one of three baby dragons in SLASH'EM and SlashTHEM to not hit as an enchanted weapon alongside baby silver dragons and baby deep dragons.
Generation
Randomly generated baby shimmering dragons are always hostile. A baby shimmering dragon can grow up into a shimmering dragon, and shimmering dragon eggs can hatch into baby shimmering dragons.
In addition to random generation, baby shimmering dragons may also appear in dragon lairs and the Wyrm Caves.[1] Baby shimmering dragons may appear among the hostile D generated in throne rooms, and can also appear among the monsters randomly generated by looting a throne while confused and carrying gold (provided there is no chest on the level).[2]
Strategy
Baby dragons in general are quite troublesome for many a hero in the early game, and baby shimmering dragons are especially annoying by the standard: their -4 AC likely eclipses that of most monsters encountered to this point, and their bites deal sizable damage considering the health pools of early characters.
