A bad egg, %, is a type of monster that appears in SLASH'EM, SlashTHEM and Hack'EM. The bad egg is a mindless and unbreathing carnivore with no limbs, head or eyes like other evil food—in Hack'EM, it is capable of passing between iron bars.
A bad egg has a single bite attack, and in Hack'EM it possesses acid resistance and a vulnerability to fire.

Generation
Bad eggs are not randomly generated except in aligned areas such as Sokoban, the Gnomish Mines, and the Oracle level. They are normally created hostile, and will not appear in Gehennom.
Bad food shops can contain sleeping bad eggs.[1]
Three different bad eggs may generate asleep in The Chamber of Gluttony within the Lawful Quest at level creation, with a 4⁄5 chance, a 3⁄5 chance and a 2⁄5 chance of each individual egg being created.
Bad eggs do not leave a corpse upon death, and are the only evil food to not drop a corresponding food item.
Strategy
Bad eggs have a moderately damaging bite for their difficulty, but are generally encountered at a point where nearly any hero is capable of handling a room full of evil food, let alone a singular evil food monster. Even if encountered earlier via polymorph, they are not too much trouble.
History
The bad egg first appears in SLASH 6.
Origin
The phrase "bad egg" is an idiom that refers to someone who is dishonest, unreliable or untrustworthy, and is likely based on the disappointment from cracking or opening an egg only to find that it has gone bad—the bad egg monster is a pun on this idiom, by interpreting it literally as an evil egg.
