- For the weapon in EvilHack and Hack'EM, see heavy war hammer.
A heavy hammer is a type of melee weapon that appears in NetHack Plus, SLASH 6 and SLASH'EM. It is a one-handed weapon that uses the hammer skill and is made of metal.
The heavy hammer is the base item for the artifact Mjollnir.
Generation
Heavy hammers are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones.
Upgrading a war hammer can create a heavy hammer, and vice versa.
Description
The heavy hammer is only slightly stronger than a normal war hammer, dealing 1d6 base damage to all monsters.
Strategy
As a base item for Mjollnir, the heavy hammer provides relatively little advantage to the artifact over the war hammer base item in vanilla NetHack: most of Mjollnir's utility in SLASH'EM comes from its massive flat +24 damage bonus against monsters without shock resistance, due to SLASH'EM artifact mechanics. With this in mind, its weight of 60 aum is not especially unreasonable, and its metal material precludes any worries about erosion (although Mjollnir is erosion-proofed when gifted regardless).
