Intoner

An intoner, n, is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The intoner is an always-female humanoid nymph that is undead, part-plant and a minion: intoners are strong and omnivorous, can be seen via infravision, and lack HP regeneration. Intoners have 5 points of AC each in the 'dodge' and 'special' categories. An intoner that is subjected to the "Echoes of the Last Word" power of the spirit Tenebrous will polymorph into black flowers instead of being subjected to level teleportation as with other undead.

Intoners have two weapon attacks, an offhand weapon attack, two claw attacks that can charm targets, and will attempt to cast one mage monster spell during each of their turns. Intoners also have the ability to sing several enchanted songs that can have highly-dangerous effects. They have skilled prowess in martial combat and a base attack bonus of +1 to-hit per level, and possess cold resistance, poison resistance, stoning resistance, drain resistance, and death resistance.

Intoners can be warded by a Circle of Acheron or by an Elder Sign at any level of reinforcement.

Generation

Intoners are not randomly generated in the main dungeon or other branches, and normally-created intoners are always hostile. Unlike most nymph monsters, intoners will always be generated awake. They are not a valid genocide target.

Intoners appear among the phantom and flower monsters that are randomly generated on the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest, and make up 2567 (~0.3527%) total of the monsters that are randomly generated there.

An intoner is always generated with the following items:

Intoners leave behind aged corpses upon death.

Origin

Intoners are partially based on the god-like beings of the same name that appear in Drakengard 3. The Intoners are described as people who can manifest superhuman abilities through the Power of Song. They mostly appear in the form of beautiful, young women branded with numbers on their foreheads, which also serve as their names: Zero, One, Two, Three, Four, and Five. Six Intoners are known to exist in total.

The Intoners are said to have freed each land from the despotic rulers of Midgard that once terrorized their peoples, and are worshiped as saviors. They are hailed as Goddesses descended from the skies due to their bountiful gifts of peace and tranquility, and although their abilities vary in certain respects, they have a remarkable magnitude of strength and each also exhibit increasingly-dangerous rapid growth in certain parts of their body (e.g. the hair or nails). The armor that each intoner monster can generate with in dNetHack and its derivative are loosely based on the costumes of each of the six Intoners in-game.
