A killer food ration, %, is a type of monster that appears in SLASH'EM, SlashTHEM and Hack'EM. The killer food ration is a mindless and unbreathing carnivore with no limbs, head or eyes like other evil food, and is the strongest of its monster class. In Hack'EM, the killer food ration is the only evil food that is not capable of passing between iron bars.
A killer food ration has a single bite attack, and in Hack'EM it possesses acid resistance and a vulnerability to fire.

Generation
Killer food rations are not randomly generated except in aligned areas such as Sokoban, the Gnomish Mines, and the Oracle level. They are normally created hostile, and will not appear in Gehennom.
Bad food shops can contain sleeping killer food rations.[1]
A sleeping killer food ration is generated asleep in The Chamber of Gluttony within the Lawful Quest at level creation, with a chance of up to four more being created: two of these killer food rations each have a 4⁄5 chance of generating, while the other two each have a 2⁄5 chance of generating.
Killer food rations do not leave a corpse upon death, and have a 1⁄3 chance of dropping a food ration.[2]
Strategy
A killer food ration's bites can be dangerous for under-powered and under-equipped heroes, but outside of polymorph a mass majority of encounters with them will occur when a hero has found a bad food shop: these special rooms are rare due to requiring the presence of a shop-compatible room, and occur deep enough in the dungeon that the monsters within are generally not much of a threat unless the hero is low-powered as described above or else becomes careless while clearing them out. Employing ranged attacks and taking advantage of their low speed, especially in combination with the speed system of SLASH'EM and SlashTHEM, can make them consistent to handle even for weaker heroes.
History
The killer food ration first appears in NetHack-- 3.1.3.
