Satyr (EvilHack)

From NetHackWiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

A satyr, n, is a type of monster that appears in EvilHack. The satyr is a male nymph that has infravision, can be seen via infravision, and will seek out gold pieces and magical items to pick up.

Satyrs have two abilities unique to them: firstly, they will actively quaff potions of booze they come across, including any that are thrown at them, and become confused from doing so similar to a hero quaffing booze—they will turn hostile and go berserk if the potion is cursed, and will otherwise become peaceful. Secondly, satyrs are the only monsters capable of playing the pan flute, and hostile ones will play them with a 15 chance each turn if the hero is nearby, which can render the hero confused, asleep or stunned if they hear its music. A hero polymorphed into a satyr can utilize pan flutes to tame monsters or put them to sleep, and can only play the flute while in that form.

Satyrs have a weapon attack and a headbutt attack.

Generation

Randomly generated satyrs are always created hostile.

A satyr has a 45 chance of being generated with a pan flute.

Strategy

A flute-playing hostile satyr can prove immensely annoying, particularly when approaching treasure zoos such as Sokoban.

Petkeepers that have a tame satyr should take care to keep him away from any booze they do not want drunk, especially if it is a smoky potion that game!

Encyclopedia entry

Satyrs, also known as fauns or the Free Folk, are fey creatures
that delight in singing, dancing, feasting, and debauchery.
Satyrs look like male humanoids of stout build, with fur-covered
lower bodies and legs and cloven hooves similar to those of a goat.
Similarly, goat-like horns top their heads; these come in a variety
of shapes and sizes, from small nubs to big curling ones akin to a
ram. They are typically seen with facial hair and wild, curly heads
of hair that ranged in length.

They have only a male sex, as female satyrs are a phenomenon that
just never naturally occurs.
