A shield of drain resistance is a type of shield that appears in NetHack. It is made of wood, and appears as a wooden shield when unidentified.

Generation

Shields of drain resistance make up 3250 (1.2%) of all armor that is randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops. Used armor dealerships and antique weapon outlets can also stock shields of drain resistance.

Description

While worn, a shield of drain resistance grants 1 base AC and drain resistance. The spellcasting penalty for a worn shield of drain resistance is much lower than most other shield types, due to its low weight.[1]

Strategy

Main article: Shield strategy

The shield of drain resistance is especially valuable for heroes that want to maintain their experience level, as it is one of three non-artifact items to grant the property besides black dragon scales and black dragon scale mail.

Identification

The shield of drain resistance shares a base price of 50zm with the shield of shock resistance, and between the two it is somewhat harder to informally identify.

A good way to identify one informally will usually be to test for the other wooden shields: similar to a ring of shock resistance, grid bugs can be used to test for a shield of shock resistance with their bite—this will pose no risk to the inventory and print a resistance message if the hero has the shock resistance property, and is ideally best done before you gain intrinsic shock resistance. Regular small shields are much simpler to deal with, as they auto-identify when bought from a shopkeeper or sold to one.

History

The shield of drain resistance first appears in NetHack 5.0.0 via commit 5d3a1e68.
