A shield of shock resistance is a type of shield that appears in NetHack. It is made of wood, and appears as a wooden shield when unidentified.
Generation
Shields of shock resistance make up 3⁄250 (1.2%) of all armor that is randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops. Used armor dealerships and antique weapon outlets can also stock shields of shock resistance.
Description
While worn, a shield of shock resistance grants 1 base AC and shock resistance, and additionally protects rings and wands from destruction by shock damage 99⁄100 (99%) of the time. The spellcasting penalty for a worn shield of shock resistance is much lower than most other shield types, due to its low weight.[1]
Strategy
The shield of shock resistance is especially valuable for heroes that want to protect their rings and wands as much as possible—it is likely to be the preferred extrinsic source of the resistance property for players looking to keep their ring and body armor slots open.
Identification
The shield of shock resistance shares a base price of 50zm with the shield of drain resistance, and between the two it is somewhat easier to informally identify: a hero suspecting an early shield of shock resistance can wear it around grid bugs and allow them to bite, similar to testing for a ring of shock resistance.
History
The shield of shock resistance first appears in NetHack 5.0.0 via commit 5d3a1e68.
