In SLASH'EM and SlashTHEM, the spellbook of resist poison allows the hero to learn the spell of resist poison. It is a level 1 protection spell, and the spellbook takes 3 actions to read.
Generation
Priests have a 1⁄9 chance of starting the game with a spellbook of resist poison.[1] Wizards have a 1⁄2 chance of starting the game with a spellbook of resist poison, and will otherwise start with a spellbook of resist sleep.[2]
Spellbooks of resist poison comprise approximately 2.03% of all spellbooks randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops.[3] Second-hand bookstores and rare books stores can also stock spellbooks of resist poison.
Writing a spellbook of resist poison with a magic marker uses up 5 to 9 charges.
Description
Successfully casting the spell gives the hero temporary poison resistance for 500 to 1499 (more) turns—this does not interfere with gaining poison resistance normally, e.g. from eating a corpse that grants the property. It has no effect if the hero casts it while they already have intrinsic sleep resistance.
Strategy
The spell of resist poison is incredibly useful in the early game: heroes fortunate enough to start with it should cast it immediately and re-apply the spell as necessary until they can find a source of permanent intrinsic poison resistance, and the spell also makes poisonous corpses that grant the property safe to eat. The temporary poison resistance also prevents various poison instadeaths that can befall the hero in the harder early game of SLASH'EM and SlashTHEM. Once the hero has obtained permanent poison resistance, however, the spellbook is a good candidate for blanking.
Heroes adhering to a food-restricting conduct, e.g. vegetarian or foodless may find this spell to be useful for a longer duration, though there are also more vegan-friendly sources of poison resistance in SLASH'EM and SlashTHEM. The spell is also especially useful if a player is observing atheist conduct alongside the given conducts, which prevents crowning to obtain the intrinsic.
History
The spellbook of resist poison first appears in NetHack Plus and SLASH 6, ancestors of SLASH'EM.
