Most of the true rumors you get from fortune cookies are pretty useless, even to a relatively unspoiled player. Likewise with the "major consultations" of the Oracle, which also seem to draw from a very small pool.

One way to make fortune cookies and Oracle consultations more valuable for all players would be to customize them to your game. These will be called fortunes, a sub-class of rumors. Like regular rumors, fortunes can be true or false.

Random engravings on the floor (including ones you produce by adding to an engraving with a wand of polymorph) never produce a fortune. From a cookie, minor consultation, or rumor-generating quest artifact, the odds of getting a fortune instead of a regular rumor depend on luck:

Luck Regular rumor False fortune True fortune
-11 or lower 0% 100% 0%
-10 10% 90% 0%
-9 20% 80% 0%
-8 30% 70% 0%
-7 40% 60% 0%
-6 50% 50% 0%
-5 54% 45% 1%
-4 58% 40% 2%
-3 62% 35% 3%
-2 66% 30% 4%
-1 70% 25% 5%
0 80% 15% 5%
1 80% 10% 10%
2 75% 5% 20%
3 70% 0% 30%
4 60% 0% 40%
5 50% 0% 50%
6 40% 0% 60%
7 30% 0% 70%
8 20% 0% 80%
9 10% 0% 90%
10 5% 0% 95%
11 or higher 0% 0% 100%

If the result is "regular rumor", then the truth / falseness is based on the BUC status of the source as usual.

Examples of fortunes

"Level 28 is heavily fortified." (indicates where to find the Castle in this game)

"You may get wet in the 11th level of Gehennom." (indicates where to find Juiblex's swamp in this game)

"The Gnomish King enjoys a good drink now and then." (indicates what type of level Mines' End is in this game)

"BBCAG is a lovely tune." (indicates to the player - NOT the character - how to play the passtune)

"There is a rolling boulder trap over there." (reveals one previously unknown trap on the current level)
