Ring of cold resistance
A ring of cold resistance is a type of ring that appears in NetHack.
Contents
Description
While worn, the ring confers cold resistance - this prevents you from taking any cold damage, though it can still affect your open inventory and shatter any potions present.
Strategy
Like some other resistance rings, the ring of cold resistance may be worth wearing early on to deal with obstacles such as an early wand of cold, or else as aid in obtaining the property intrinsically: for example, blue jellies are sessile but cannot be attacked in melee without triggering their cold passives, and winter wolves and their cubs can generate in the early game and cause severe damage with their breath. Their corpses and tins along of such monsters also serve as decent sources of the intrinsic.
Identification
The ring of cold resistance is 150zm like many other rings with resistance properties.
History
In Hack 1.21, which is based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, a ring of fire and cold resistance exists that confers both properties. The ring of cold resistance appears as its own item in Hack for PDP-11, and is also included in the initial item list for Hack 1.0.
Messages
- The cold water faucet flashes brightly for a moment.
- You dropped a ring of cold resistance into a sink - this will prompt you to type-name the ring.
Variants
dNetHack
In dNetHack, the ring of cold resistance gives a message when worn, and like all extrinsic sources of cold resistance it also protects your inventory from cold damage. In addition, extrinsic sources of resistance properties are much more desirable, since many intrinsics in dNetHack time out depending on their source.
Message
- Your finger feels warm!
- You put on a ring of cold resistance.
EvilHack
In EvilHack, the ring of cold resistance is worthwhile as an extrinsic source of the property to safely traverse the Ice Queen's Realm and block cold damage from the level itself or the attacks of several monsters within - beware of ice nymphs stealing the ring off your finger if you do not have full intrinsic resistance or a backup extrinsic source!
