| Reference | EvilHack 0.9.2 - src/monst.c, line 1349 |
The Red Horse, u, is a unique monster that appears in EvilHack. The Red Horse is a horse-like animal that is strong, capable of flight, possesses enhanced HP regeneration, has infravision, can see invisible, and can be seen via infravision. The Red Horse is a herbivore, and is the only one of the Riders' steeds that can eat and be tamed (let alone as a domestic animal).
The Red Horse has two kick attacks that deal physical damage and a bite attack that inflicts fire damage. The Red Horse has fire resistance and poison resistance.
Generation
The Red Horse is always generated peaceful, and is not a valid polymorph form or genocide target.
If the hero enters the Astral Plane for the first time, their alignment record is 9 or greater and they have not severely abused their alignment or worse, they will be presented with the tame and saddled Red Horse as a reward in lieu of the standard Angel.
Origin
The "red horse" refers to the steed of War, who is one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (or the Riders of the Apocalypse) that appear in The Book of Revelation, the last book of most common versions of the Christian Bible. The sixth chapter of the book has verses describing War and the other Riders as they appear when the Lamb (representing Jesus) opens six of the seven seals of the Apocalypse—these quotes serve as the encyclopedia entry for the Riders and their steeds in NetHack and its variants, and are cited from the New International Version. The passage describing War and his horse is as follows:
- I heard the second living creature say, 'Come!' Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other.
- Revelation 6:3-4, describing War.
War as a rider is sometimes taken to represent civil war as opposed to the war of conquest that the first Horseman is said to bring. His horse's colour is red (πυρρός, "purrhós" from πῦρ, "fire"), and in some translations the color is specifically a "fiery" red. Both the color and War's possession of a great sword (μάχαιρα, "mákhaira") suggest a declaration of war (akin to swords in heraldry) and blood that is to be spilled. In military symbolism, swords held upward (and especially crossed ones) signify war and entering into battle.
Encyclopedia entry
[Pestilence:] And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals,
and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four
beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white
horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given
unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
[War:] And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the
second beast say, Come and see. And there went out another
horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon
to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one
another: and there was given unto him a great sword.
[Famine:] And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the
third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black
horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his
hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say,
A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley
for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.
[Death:] And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the
voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. And I looked, and
behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death,
and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over
the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with
hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
