Tonal instrument

In NetHack, tonal instruments are instruments which can be used to play a particular melody, including the passtune if you know it.

List of tonal instruments

The tonal instruments are:

• wooden flute
• magic flute
• tooled horn
• frost horn
• fire horn
• wooden harp
• magic harp
• bugle

Description

Applying a tonal instrument will prompt you if you want to improvise; pressing n will instead allow you to select a series of five notes from A-G to play. If you are stunned, confused, or hallucinating, you will improvise automatically with the tonal instrument.

Strategy

Tonal instruments are the only ones that can be used to play and uncover the passtune.
