For other implementations of the monster, see Cerberus.

Cerberus, d, is a unique monster that appears in dNetHack and notdNetHack. He is a three-headed, carnivorous and hell hound-like animal that can be seen via infravision, and may turn traitor while tame.

Cerberus has three bite attacks and a strong fire breath weapon, and possesses fire resistance.

Consuming Cerberus's corpse, tin, or blood conveys long-lasting but temporary fire resistance.

Generation

Cerberus is always generated hostile, and is not a valid form for polymorph.

Cerberus appears in the Windowless Tower, where he is placed just inside the main door of the ground floor courtyard.

Strategy

While Cerberus is not particularly difficult overall, he can still pose a serious threat to early game characters attempting to clear the Tower without fire resistance or a sufficient health pool.

Encyclopedia entry

Cerberus, (or Kerberos in Greek), was the three-headed dog
that guarded the Gates of Hell. He allowed any dead to enter,
and likewise prevented them all from ever leaving. He was
bested only twice: once when Orpheus put him to sleep by
playing bewitching music on his lyre, and the other time when
Hercules confronted him and took him to the world of the
living (as his twelfth and last labor).
