Food poisoning is acquired by eating an old corpse. In SLASH'EM, you may also get it from swallowing a pill. It is marked by the text FoodPois
on the status line. It is eventually fatal, but can be cured by prayer, a eucalyptus leaf, non-cursed potions of extra healing and full healing, a unicorn horn or a spell of cure sickness.
Food poisoning is completely preventable (in NetHack) by avoiding eating old corpses. Corpses left by zombies and other undead are always considered old.
