In NetHack, the term hat is used refer to any of the following helms in certain messages:[1]
- cornuthaum
- dunce cap
- elven leather helm, known as a leather hat when unidentified, or simply as a hat in variants that implement an object materials system
- fedora
Hats are generally non-rigid helms: they do not protect against falling objects, but can be worn while polyselfed into a form with a horned head, and wearing one lowers the amount of damage taken if you hit the ceiling from quaffing a cursed potion of levitation.
Additionally, the dwarvish iron helm appears as a hard hat when unidentified, but otherwise is always referred to as a helm.
